You Are Not Average โ Welcome to Perisson
Your body has been telling a story. Let's learn how to listen.
Hi friend,

I'm Oluwakemi Olowoyo, MD โ many people call me Dr. O. I'm a board-certified family physician with additional training in lifestyle and functional medicine, and over the last several years, one question kept getting louder the more patients I saw:
Why does the same diagnosis show up so differently in different people? And why does the same treatment help one person move forward, while another person stays stuck?
The honest answer I kept coming back to is this:
Modern medicine can be excellent, especially when something is urgent, dangerous, or needs immediate treatment. But when it comes to many everyday health struggles โ blood pressure, blood sugar, weight gain, fatigue, poor sleep, inflammation, brain fog, stress, hormones, and the slow changes that build over time โ people are often treated according to averages.
But none of us are average.
We are individuals.
- Different histories.
- Different stress loads.
- Different sleep patterns.
- Different food environments.
- Different genetics.
- Different seasons of life.
- Different bodies compensating quietly for years before anything finally shows up on a lab, as symptoms, or as a diagnosable condition.
That is the heart behind Perisson Optimized Health, and it is the reason I am starting this newsletter.
This is about individualized medicine โ combining the rigor of conventional medicine with the deeper, root-cause lens of lifestyle and functional medicine, so nothing important gets missed on either side.
Not "one protocol fits all." Not fear-based health advice. Not chasing every trend.
But learning how to understand what your body has been trying to tell you โ and how to respond with wisdom, clarity, and practical next steps.
Wherever you are starting from, you may see yourself in one of these:
The Early Awakener Something in you has started paying attention. Maybe it is a family history you do not want to repeat. Maybe it is a lab result that raised an eyebrow, or a tiredness that does not quite make sense yet. Nothing may be "wrong" exactly โ but you are no longer willing to wait until it becomes wrong.
The Recalibrator You are already in it. A diagnosis, maybe more than one. A prescription, maybe several. A body that is asking for more attention than it used to. You are not looking to simply manage things forever. You want to understand what is driving the pattern, move the needle in the right direction, and, where possible and safely guided, need less intervention over time instead of more.
The Forward-Looker Things may be relatively stable, and you intend to keep them that way. Your focus is not crisis mode. It is staying sharp, mobile, strong, independent, useful, and present for the next 20โ30 years or more โ not just getting through the next 5.
Maybe you see yourself in one. Maybe in two. Maybe your season changes over time.
That is exactly the point.
This newsletter is not meant to box you in. It is meant to help you pay attention, ask better questions, and take the next right step for your body and your season.
I am starting this now, during Self-Care Month, because I believe self-care is much deeper than pampering or checking a wellness box.
Real self-care is learning to listen to your body before it has to get louder. It is understanding your numbers before they become a diagnosis. It is protecting your energy, sleep, strength, peace, and purpose. It is stewarding your health so you can keep living the life you are called to live.
Dr. O's Take:
I did not start this because I believe I have all the answers. I started it because, over the years, I have learned enough to know that many people are not out of options โ they simply have not been shown how to understand the "why" behind what is happening in their bodies.
I also got tired of watching people get handed a prescription and a pat on the back when what they really needed was someone to slow down, explain the pattern, and help them see that they had real choices.
Here is what you can expect from me:
- One newsletter each month.
- Grounded in real evidence.
- Translated into plain language.
- Focused on practical next steps.
- No fear tactics. No overwhelm.
- Just clarity, hope, and one small thing you can actually do.
And as Perisson grows, there will be more to come โ deeper resources, courses, and ways to work with me directly for those who want to go further. My commitment to you is that this newsletter will always be rooted in real education, not a sales pitch.
So here is my question for you:
Which one feels most like your current season โ The Early Awakener, The Recalibrator, or The Forward-Looker?
I am so glad you are here.
And if you know someone who could use this too โ a friend, a family member, a sibling, even that one frenemy who's always "starting Monday" โ feel free to forward this their way.
To your health, Oluwakemi Olowoyo, MD Perisson Optimized Health Live abundantly, optimize your health.
This newsletter is educational in nature and is not a substitute for personalized medical care from your own physician. Always talk with your doctor before making changes to any medication or treatment plan.
